Looking For Creative Freelance Writing Jobs: Effective Guidelines

Getting started in freelance writing is never easy. For creative writers, the task at hand is even more difficult. Many clients are only looking for website content, white papers and e-books. Unfortunately, very few projects are available for creative types. Despite this initial setback, it is possible to make a living in this field. Using some of the following tips, new writers can begin developing their career.

Short Stories and Novels

Writers can choose two ways to make a living. The writer can either produce books in their own name, or they can work as a ghostwriter. As a ghostwriter, the writer will create fantasy, romance and other novels for their client. These creative projects may range from 5,000 to 100,000 words. Depending on the client and the type of project, ghostwriting can be a lucrative field. To get hired, the writer will need to have an excellent portfolio and strong work experience.

If the writer wants to work under their own name, it will be a bit harder to get started in the beginning. Although most publishing companies prefer to hire experienced, published authors, it is still possible to get a book published. Writers who have issues getting their book initially published can always try the self-publishing route. Even though self-published books tend to sell fewer copies, the royalties are higher and the writers tend to bring home a similar pay check.

Literary Magazines

Writers who currently have a part-time or full-time job can start by getting their work published in literary magazines. This type of publication normally accepts submissions throughout the year. Once the writer sends in their work, it can take weeks or months for them to hear back from the magazine. If the writer's work is purchased, the writer will normally receive a payment that totals several hundreds of dollars. Even more importantly, getting published will lend the writer an added level of credibility.

Copywriting

Although it is not the first thought writers have when they think of creative work, ad copywriting is actually a very creative field. Creating advertisement copy is a difficult and financially rewarding industry. Through these projects, the writer can begin to earn a decent income from their writing. Some writers consider copywriting to be a type of selling out, but it is still a fun and interesting way to earn a living. At the very least, the writer will be able to gain additional experience as a freelancer.
